WHAT IS A DRIVER QUALIFICATION FILE?

Under federal law 49 CFR Part 391.51, all employers who employ commercial drivers must retain verification on file of their drivers' legal and physical ability to operate the vehicle in their class.

This involves pulling a driving history, a previous employment history, a 3 year inquiry to state agencies, a driver's road test inspection and corresponding certificate of completion, annual driver's certificate of violations, as well as other pertinent documents relating to the specific driver's public record. These files need to be updated yearly.
